Ferrets are (a little too) Smart • 02.11.2025

A few animated anecdotes about my silly business of ferrets using their brains for mischief.
Thanks for watching!

Sidenote:
I am currently weaning the ferrets onto kibble from their raw diet due to the current bird flu situation. I wish I could explain this to Princess, who thinks I am changing her food to be cruel to her for no reason. Best of luck to her in these trying times.

Holy shit, this is without a doubt one of the best and most adorable animations I've ever seen on this site!! I love this so much. <3

But the funny thing with Youtube, is that the formats they server primarily are VP9 and AV1, secondary formats are h264 and then stuff like 3GP for old Nokia phones, also for 1080p videos, youtube has quality stream that's always VP9 and technically only for youtube subscribers (but as for e621, this does not count as paid material as the paywall is by platform, not by the author of the work).

So I checked this post that huh, 53.9MB AV1 MP4, that can't be right, so I check youtubes streams for this (expand for the code):

Huh, so not only is highest quality AV1 stream 399 supposedly 13.38MiB, much lower from 53.9MB that this e621 is, there is also VP9 stream available that the er completely ignored (ignore filesize when the filesize has ~ as it's never even near that filesize with ~ instances).
So what I believe that happened is that the previous er of the post, took highest quality AVC (h264) stream 137, then transcoded it into AV1 one and ed it.
Not only is this baffling extra work, because now you have to transcode on top of ing the video, but also the quality is much worse and filesize several times the original.

Anyway, now the post is replaced with youtubes own native VP9 stream and because it's VP9, the post is now WebM, double the quality and much lower filesize.

I converted it to MP4 and then transcoded it with AV1 on Handbrake. The reason why is because I am not a YouTube and have no access to such features.

    1. So, you ed WebM, you converted it to MP4, then transcoded it to MP4 with handbrake? What the fuck are you doing?!? Just literally the stream and as is, both VP9 and AV1 streams work. If AV1 stream goes into WebM container, you can force it into MP4 instead with --merge-output-format mp4.
    2. stream is actually publicly available stream that's only hidden on the website itself, you can literally just check the streams yourself and see stream 616 and it's there (altough it's incorrectly labeled as MP4, even though it's VP9 which is WebM).
2a. Extra point, if you don't see stream, you can forward your cookies from browser with that has subscription and it should show up. For e621, the youtube is not much differend from e.g. needing on Furaffinity to see explicit content.

EDIT: also you mean to say, you have never, ever ed youtubes VP9 or AV1 streams and ed those and all of your past s are lower quality, bloated transcodes with handbrake?

Not, never ed direct WebM. I converted the video to MP4 via a conversion site then converted it to Webm with Handbrake.

  • Ferrets are incredibly smart and intelligent.
    Most mustelids are.
    Especially otters

They aren't quite crow or parrot level.
And most certainly not dolphin level.

But they are much smarter and more intelligent than cats or dogs.

  • Just discovered that channel on Youtube & gave it a sub after watching the only other video he have ed. Someone needs to that other video here as well, also very high in production quality with proper attention to detail along great body language & cute without being cringe.

  • I'm generally not a huge fan of this kind of tumblroid looking humans, but, damn. This animation is a clear exception. The fact that the little fluffy ferrets steal the show (in fucking spades) does help but mainly, the whole thing is just very very well done both from the technical POV and script-wise. That's really something.
