Draconic Kobolds

A subspecies of kobolds native to the layer of Hallelujah, who exist almost exclusively in a state of symbiosis with their dragon masters. Larger, stronger, smarter, and more magically capable than the average kobold, they form the bulk of draconic society and allow it to function, as dragons are few in number and mostly too prideful to ever openly work for or with one another. In exchange for lifelong loyalty to their dragon masters, draconic kobolds are very well cared for. Dragons value their servants highly and care for their lives and health, ensuring that all are well-educated, well-fed and safe. Though in part, this arrangement is somewhat necessary. Draconic kobolds, being sex feeders like their lesser kin, need a regular source of sexual activity and fluids to avoid needing to subsist on less nutritious mundane food, and dragons require an outlet for their extremely heightened libido. As such, they are something of a natural match for one another, though their kinship expands far beyond this natural symbiosis.

How this symbiotic relationship formed is unknown. They have been in the service of dragons for as far back as any historical record reaches, even the all-encoming archives of the dragons. How they attained their greater physical, mental and magical abilities compared to ordinary kobolds is equally mysterious. No one is quite sure if it is the result of genetic engineering, selective breeding, or natural adaptation overtime.

All that is known is that kobolds are very effective as servants of the dragons. While ordinary kobolds are conniving and arrogant, draconic kobolds are considerably more humble, loyal to a fault, and incredibly dedicated to whatever tasks they have been given. The aforementioned dedication is what they are best known for. Once given a task by an authority they recognize (particularly the dragons they work for), draconic kobolds will pursue that task to completion with near-unnatural dedication. If need be, they will often forego sleep and food for days to see even minor tasks to completion. Their precision is also machine-like, often compared to that of the work-obsessed goblins.

Draconic Kobold Culture Overview

Unlike their fiercely independent kin, draconic kobolds are defined from beginning to end by their relationship with dragons. Very little of their culture is truly their own, with their daily rituals, clothing styles and other cultural hallmarks ultimately being offshoots of dragon culture to some degree or another. Their lives are also defined by service to their dragon masters as well, as every kobold family is sworn from hatching until death to service to their dragon masters and their blood relatives. Their loyalty to this service is very nearly absolute, possibly instinctual, and overrides most other desires the kobolds have.

However, the above does not leave draconic kobolds completely without identity. Though fundamentally their daily lives are determined by the need to assist in running their masters' various enterprises, these kobolds maintain their cultural hallmarks, such as their own religion separate from the fundamentally atheist philosophies of dragons that has echoes of the spiritualism of lesser kobolds. They also possess their own architecture and fashion, which are closer in aesthetic to ancient Greece and Rome to the more gothic, French-like styling of buildings and clothing designed by dragons.

They also possess their own family units separate from dragons. Kobolds divide themselves into families. However, kobold families are divided not by any kind of blood relation, but rather what dragon they serve. As a result, these families can be quite a bit larger than traditional families and include individuals not related by blood. As a general practice, adolescent dragons heading out on their own into the world will be given a number of kobolds by their parent(s) to found a new family.

Leadership in goblin families differs from family to family. Dragons with larger enterprises typically leave their underlings to sort out their own day-to-day affairs, in which case the family's leadership will bear a curious resemblance to that of a lesser kobold tribe, just with different names - ministers and managers in place of matriarchs and elders, priestesses and druids in place of shamans, etc.
